Sustainability Objective Three

To reduce, and eventually eliminate Whistler's contribution to ongoing degradation of natural systems by physical means.

Both our quality of life and ecosystem integrity depend upon the capacity of natural systems to reorganize waste into new resources, such as production of oxygen, this objective suggests thatwe have to reduce activities that systematically destroy life-sustaining ecosystems.

Generally this means:

  • drawing from well-managed ecosystems,
  • making the most productive and efficient use of both resources and land, and
  • exercising caution in all kinds of modifications of nature.

Examples

Favouring

Avoiding

  • Fast-growing crops (e.g. hemp, bamboo, etc...)
  • Slow-growing, resource-intensive methods
  • Materials from well-managed ecosystems
  • Using over-harvested resources
  • Re-usable, recyclable
  • Disposable, non-recyclable
  • Recycled materials
  • Virgin resources
